Delectable Mountains Quilt Pattern – A Fat Quarter Shop Hop

Today I’m thrilled to show you the Late Night Quilter version of a fantastic Fat Quarter Shop pattern, Delectable Mountains, made from the latest block in their Classic & Vintage Series.

When Fat Quarter Shop invited us to participate in this hop, we were so excited, because my friend Michelle and I happened to be in need of a baby gift for our close friend Kitty, from Night Quilter.  We thought the Delectable Mountains Quilt would make the perfect present for this new baby, who desperately needs a new quilt (not really… that poor baby is surrounded by quilts day and night.  But Quilters Gotta Quilt, right?).

The pattern is written in 4 sizes, from Baby to Queen, and Fat Quarter Shop graciously allowed us to choose whatever fabric we wanted from their huge online store.

Michelle and I chose the fabric line Morning Walk, by Leah Duncan.  Leah is an Austin-based designer, and her latest fabric line is inspired by local scenery.  So it seemed like the perfect choice for us. The mustard, mint, orange and navy are boyish, but different.  I love it.

I am so grateful to have such wonderful friends in the quilting community.  A year ago, when I started my blog, I knew no one who quilted.  And now, I have friends like Kitty and Michelle, who inspire and support me every day.

Since our blog names are so similar, people always ask Kitty and me how we met.  Well, over a year ago, we both noticed the similarity in blog names too, and started (gently) stalking each other.  We both realized that we were living parallel lives across the country from one another.  Despite the distance between Texas and Maine, we have become fast friends.  I can’t wait to see her newest little baby in person someday; but for now, her beautiful pictures and blog posts will have to do.

I hope Baby Finn likes his new quilt, and someday, when he’s bigger, playing in his playroom with the quilt draped across his favorite red chair, his mama can tell him that it was made with a lot of love, as all good quilts are.

The delectable mountain block is as old as the sea (or at least the early 1800s, according to Barbara Brackman). It can be constructed a couple of different ways, but the Fat Quarter Shop version uses familiar Half Square Triangles (HTS), so this block is a snap to put together. In its most traditional layout, it has a medallion feel to it, which makes it ideal for modern quilters who are head over heels in love with medallion quilts these days.

Tips For Success:

♦ Try the Magic 8 Method of making 8 HSTs at a time.  It’s a huge time saver!  Here’s a link to a tutorial by Chez Stitches on how to do it.

For this pattern, you’ll need to make 2″ finished HSTs.  For the Magic 8 Method, use two 5 3/4″ squares (or 6″ squares if you like to be able to trim down your HSTs for improved accuracy).

♦ Chain piece your HSTs!   Here’s a 30 second video of me chain piecing away! (Special thanks to Michelle, for making most of the HSTs on this quilt!)

Quilting

To quilt this, I used straight line quilting, because I know that is one of Kitty’s all-time favorites. I also used Aurifil (40 wt cotton…. not the longarm poly).  The cotton thread held up well (I went easy on it and avoided any intense longarm acrobatics on this quilt) and I had very little breakage.

But the big square in the middle needed a little something special instead of just straight lines.  So I used my water erasable pen to trace a motif designed by Patricia Ritter of Urban Elementz, and did a little ruler work on my Nolting longarm.

I sure wish I had enough time to make it bigger.  This quilt would be gorgeous in a master bedroom!
